Philip Kang (Bass)

Philip Kang (Bass)Philip Kang was born in Korea in 1948. He studied at Seoul National University and the Graduate School of the Berlin University of the Arts. He took lessons from Mario del Monaco and Tito Gobbi.

In 1975, he started his career at Deutschland Opera Berlin. He was the first Asian formal member in Berlin Opera house.

In 1979, he won the first place at "Mario del Monaco" competition. In 1981, he performed the role as Philip Ⅱ(Don Carlos) at "Toti Dal Monte" opera competition and won the first place again. In that year, he made his successful debut as the same role at the Treviso theater under Maestro Armando Gatto.

In the following year, he started widening his sphere of activity abroad. He was invited to Bilbao festival in Spain and performed with world-class opera singers such as R. Bruson, J .Carreras, G. Dimitrova, P. Cappuccilli, M. Chiara, M. Caballe, M. Zampieri, etc.

He has also made appearance with Daniel Barenboim, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Bernard Haitink, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Riccardo Chailly, etc. in Covent Garden, Vienna State Opera, Paris Opera House Opera House, etc in Europe, ranging to Carnegie Hall in New York. His performances were done with world-renowned orchestra such as Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, London Philharmonic etc.

At Bayreuth Festival, held on 1988 to 1992, he performed Hagen, Fafner, and Hunding as the first Asian under Daniel Barenboim and these were recorded on video and CDs. That year, he was selected as the best opera singer in Opera Welt, which is one of the designated opera magazine in Europe. He was invited in the season of 2000-2004 again and performed as Hunding, Fafner, etc. under Giuseppe Sinopoli

Since 1995, he has been teaching at Seoul National University as a professor in department of music and he still plays main roles for various operas in Europe.
