Master Class
Nicola Martinucci (tenor)
2009 Summer Music Festival
Masterclass for Opera Singing
M° Nicola Martinucci.
Italian tenor Nicola Martinucci was born on 28 March 1941 in Taranto, Italy, where he received his vocal training and education under amongst others Sara Sforni, Gianfranca Ostini and Marcello del Monaco. He made his operatic debut at Milano's Teatro Nuovo as Manrico in 1966, after having won prizes in the Milanese As.Li.Co. singing competition (as Manrico) and the Viotti competition (singing the role of Calaf), and upon the encouragement of Mario del Monaco. He soon appeared throughout Italy at major theaters.
Despite being widely recognized as a world class [spinto] tenor, his La Scala debut came as late as 1983, and his Met debut took place in 1988. Further merits include appearances at the Royal Opera at Covent Garden, Vienna State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Zurich Opera, Arena di Verona, Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, Teatro Comunale in Florence, as well as in Moscow, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Sevilla, Cairo (set against the pyramids) and theaters in China.
Among his prime roles count Radames (he was highly successful in this role in Verona during the years 1982-86), Calaf, Canio, Andrea Chenier, but he has also recorded and performed Verdi's Otello and undertook the taxing role of Mascagni's Marat of Il Piccolo Marat late 70's as one of few post war tenors that has tested himself against this repertory.
Recent and current engagements include Andrea Chenier in Tel Aviv (March 2002) and Trieste (April and May 2002), Madama Butterfly at La Scala (May and June 2002), Pagliacci in Roma (July and August 2002), Turandot in Genova (October and November 2002), and scheduled performances are Aida in Tel Aviv (March-May 2003) and Tosca at La Scala (September-November 2003).
"Firmly established as one of the most acclaimed voices in the Verdi, Puccini and verismo repertoire, he has been applauded for his performances of the leading tenor roles in Aida, Andrea Chénier, Tosca, Pagliacci, Norma, La Fanciulla del West, Manon Lescaut, Madama Butterfly, Il Trovatore, La Gioconda, Francesca Di Rimini and I Lombardi."
